What the Aquafides water footprint certification is

The Aquafides water footprint certification is the independent verification, by a Certifying Auditor, that an organisation has implemented a Water Footprint Management System in accordance with the Aquafides Protocol v3.2 and complies with the quantitative water impact reduction commitments declared in its Water Policy.

Unlike generic sustainability seals, Aquafides is a proprietary standard specifically designed to go deep on the water axis, with simultaneous coverage of the five most demanding international standards and with a non-negotiable ethical guarantee: the one who advises the client cannot be the one who later issues the certificate.

Why certify with Aquafides

There are several standards and seals related to water footprint and environmental sustainability. Aquafides is different for five reasons that no other one combines simultaneously:

1. Simultaneous coverage of five standards on a single file

The Aquafides Protocol v3.2 is designed to cover, on a single documentary body, the verifiable requirements of ISO 14046, AWS Standard v2.0, ESRS E3 (CSRD), GRI 303 and CDP Water. The certified organisation has, from a single process, the inputs needed to respond to all five sources.

2. Mandatory Advisor / Auditor separation

Annex IV of the Protocol establishes that the person who supports implementation (Advisor) cannot be the same one who later audits and issues the certificate (Auditor). It is the ethical piece that distinguishes a credible certificate from just any seal.

3. Differentiated typologies SP / CS / PA

The Protocol distinguishes three certifiable organisation profiles with documentary catalogues and specific requirements: Productive Systems (physical water operations), Supply Chains (distribution and commercialisation) and Public Administrations (territorial responsibility over water).

4. Aquafides Spread Effect

Certified Supply Chains assume multi-year quantitative commitments to transmit water requirements to their water-intensive suppliers. This turns every certified CS into a systemic change agent that drags hundreds of Productive Systems toward their own certification.

5. Methodological water depth

Aquafides fully applies the Water Footprint Network methodology (Hoekstra et al., 2011) and ISO 14046:2014, including impact assessment with the AWARE catchment factor. Simultaneous coverage of five international standards

The Aquafides Protocol v3.2 is structured in a proprietary [CORE] nucleus, which constitutes the base of the file, and a series of compatible modules activatable on demand depending on the market and regulations applicable to the client:

Typologies SP / CS / PA: find yours

Productive Systems (SP)

Entities that transform water, totally or partially, into goods or services through direct physical operation. Their direct water footprint (Scope 1 + 2) is significant and usually represents most of their material impact. Examples: agricultural cooperative, beverage factory, hotel, hospital, paper plant, pig farm, thermoelectric plant, winery, olive mill, treatment plant. The file focuses on rigorous footprint calculation (green/blue/grey), the operational Reduction Plan, sub-metering by blocks and staff training.

Supply Chains (CS)

Entities whose main activity is distributing, storing, transporting, intermediating or commercialising goods produced by third parties, without significant transformation incorporating water. Examples: supermarket chain, food wholesaler, logistics operator, e-commerce platform, industrial distributor, large textile retailer, pharmacy chain. The file places the supply chain at the core, with the mandatory Aquafides Spread Effect.

Public Administrations (PA)

Public entities with territorial competence over the water cycle. Examples: municipalities, water intermunicipal bodies, provincial councils, regional governments, river basin authorities and autonomous bodies. The file focuses on territorial water diagnosis, the Municipal or Territorial Water Plan, public participation and green public procurement with water criteria.

The Aquafides Spread Effect

It is the specific doctrine of the Protocol applicable mandatorily to every certified Supply Chain. It holds that a CS can only be Aquafides-certified if it assumes multi-year, quantitative and verifiable commitments of water transmission to its chain of water-intensive suppliers. The minimum binding commitments (Annex VIII) are seven:

• Complete inventory of water-intensive suppliers within 6 months.
• Letter and questionnaire sent to 100 % within 12 months.
• Completed questionnaire received from ≥ 60 % of suppliers within 18 months.
• Water contract clause in 100 % of new contracts within 24 months.
• ≥ 30 % of water-intensive suppliers with their own footprint certification within 36 months.
• Formal non-renewal policy with suppliers unwilling to engage after 36 months.
• Active participation in at least one collective sector initiative.

The 11 steps of the certification process

1. Contact and initial diagnosis: SP/CS/PA typological classification, relevant modules and preliminary scope.
2. Proposal and contracting: commercial offer, professional contract and Advisor/Auditor separation statement.
3. Advisor designation: and constitution of the client’s Water Sustainability Committee.
4. Advisor’s technical visit: for the capture of primary data.
5. Inventory, LDA matrix and calculation of the footprint.
6. Technical report and Reduction Plan: of the water footprint.
7. Implementation of the Water Management System and initial training.
8. Designation of the Certifying Auditor, independent of the Advisor.
9. Certifying audit.
10. Certificate issue and public page with verification QR.
11. Annual follow-up and review by Management.

An average client closes the complete cycle in 12 to 16 weeks from the signing of the contract to the issue of the certificate. The technical visit and water inventory are closed in the first 4 to 6 weeks. The Technical Calculation Memorandum and the Reduction Plan are ready between weeks 8 and 10. The independent Aquafides audit and the issue of the certificate with public verification QR take place between weeks 12 and 16. Cases with very mature operational documentation may close in 10 weeks; cases with relevant documentary deviations may extend up to 20 weeks.

Mandatory Advisor / Auditor separation (Annex IV)

In every Aquafides certification, the person who advises the client and helps them comply with the protocol cannot be the same one who later audits and certifies. This separation is formalised in Annex IV of the Protocol and is the central ethical piece of Aquafides. Within aquafides.org it is materialised in two functional subdomains: advisors.aquafides.org for advisors and auditors.aquafides.org for auditors.

File documentation

The certification file is structured in thematic blocks. For a standard case it gathers more than forty verifiable documents, grouped into: governance (Water Policy, Committee Minutes, System Manual), scope and materiality, inventory and data, calculation and impact (calculation memorandum, AWARE assessment, KPI dashboard), reports and reduction plan, supply chain, training, operational control, audit and certification, transparency and communication, ESG mapping (ESRS E3, GRI 303, SDGs) and AWS module.

Public pricing 2026-2027

Aquafides applies penetration pricing 2026-2027 to accelerate sector adoption. Prices for Productive Systems start from €8,000 for hotels with fewer than 100 rooms and reach €25,000 for medium-to-large agricultural cooperatives.
